چکیده

Background New developments and expanding indications have lead to a significant increase in the number of pacemakers and loop recorders being implanted. Alongside this cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) is increasing being utilised in the assessment of cardiac disease. In the UK, MRI conditional devices are often now being implanted as the device of choice by cardiologists as it is assumed the patient may need an MRI scan at some stage in their lifetime. The number of patients that present to the MRI scanner with a cardiac device is likely to increase rapidly.

Canadian Heart Rhythm Society and Canadian Association of Radiologists consensus statement on magnetic resonance imaging with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has historically been considered contraindicated for individuals with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) such as pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. Magnetic resonance scanners produce magnetic fields that can interact negatively with the metallic components of CIEDs. However, as CIED technology has advanced, newer MRI conditional devices have...

Current provision for MRI scanning of patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices - a national survey of hospitals in England

Background With increasing numbers of patients requiring implantation of a cardiac implantable electronic device (pacemaker or defibrillator), and MRI becoming the gold standard investigation for the diagnosis and monitoring of many medical conditions, device manufacturers have developed MRI conditional CIEDs. Many hospitals now implant MRI conditional devices as standard, meaning that there ar...

Magnetic resonance imaging in patients with a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator

AIMS Our aim was to evaluate the potential for safely imaging patients with a new type of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator called the subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) in a 1.5 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. With the increasing number of patients with cardiac implantable devices who are indicated for MRI, there is a growing need for establishing MRI ...

Safety of magnetic resonance imaging in patients with implanted cardiac prostheses and metallic cardiovascular electronic devices.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with implanted cardiac prostheses and metallic cardiovascular electronic devices is sometimes a risky procedure. Thus MRI in these patients should be performed when it is the only examination able to help with the diagnosis. Moreover the diagnostic benefit must outweigh the risks. Coronary artery stents, prosthetic cardiac valves, metal sternal sutur...

Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices: a review of the dangers and difficulties in MR scanning and attempts to improve safety

An increasing number of patients are being treated with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), many of which are MR conditional. There is a lack of literature on the safe scanning of MR conditional CIEDs. This review article discusses MR imaging safety in patients with implanted CIEDs. Guidelines on safe use and indications of imaging patients with MR conditional CIEDs are descr...
